Is it acceptable to call a .48 ct. diamond a 1/2 ct.? It seems to me that they always fudge a little bit, and always to their benefit. Is it legal? |
 |
This has been a trouble spot for ethical jewelers for years. We believe that if a diamond is .48 ct. then it should be sold as .48 ct. and not as a half carat or a light half carat. A 1/2 ct. diamond should weigh at least .50 ct. and a 1 carat diamond should weigh at least 1.00 ct. |

When my wife and I were married a few years ago I gave her a nice diamond wedding band of 14kt. White Gold. Lately she has been complaining about it itching her finger and there does seem to be a redness or rash. What could be the problem? |
 |
This could be from something as simple as the ring becoming dirty. Not necessarily from dirt, but perfumes, hand lotions, cleaning detergents, etc. It could be from a recent chemical change in your wife... recent childbirth, medications prescribed from a physician, or just from a new desire to be healthier and drinking citrus juices.
If it is from hand lotions etc. then bring it into one of our locations and we will give it a complete polish, cleaning, and rhodium plating. This will solve the problem for now and always if you have it steam cleaned more often. If it is happening from a recent childbirth then it should correct itself given some time. If from a physician prescription then you should consult with him (her) and perhaps another medication will work as well.
The alloys in white gold (to make it white) is nickel and silver. Some people are allergic to nickel or silver. The alternative in that case is platinum. However, since all was well for some time (years), and then this begins, I would think it should be correctable. |

Does Nevada have anyplace where they can find gemstones? |
 |
Most people know that Nevada is the largest producer of gold in the "lower 48" states. Nevada also has gem deposits across the state. Amethyst is abundant in the state as is opal and garnet. There are many books in libraries that you can find that will give you some direction to finding gem deposits. Since Nevada is federally owned anybody can find and keep them in most parts of the state. |

My automatic watch is supposed to keep running all of the time. Why does it stop during the night? |
 |
An automatic watch is a mechanical timepiece. Wearing the watch creates movement to the watch, and an offset weight swings and with gearing winds the watch for you. If you are not wearing the watch all day, or if you are not active enough then the watch cannot get enough winding to the mainspring and thus not enough stored energy. |

How do I clean pearls without damaging them? |
 |
The easiest way is to take a soft washcloth moistened with luke-warm water and gently rub them somewhat like worry-beads. Don't use cleaners unless specifically made for pearls. |

I have a gold ring that is stamped 14k. One time I took it to another jeweler and they tested it as 12k. Are those tests accurate? What is the testing procedure? |
 |
Depends on the test. "Acid Testing" should be more accurate.
1. Perhaps the operator had not tested it properly.
2. Maybe the solution was bad or contaminated.
The most accurate way of testing is sending your jewelry to a lab and have assay testing done. Assaying is expensive and doesn't necessarily need to be done, therefore; a good "Acid Testing" will be the most accurate, inexpensive way to find the karat weight. |

Recently, I was handed down a ring from my grandfather. It has a beautiful square red stone, but the band is not solid. I would like to have it put in a new band. Is that possible? |
 |
Yes, "Tower of Jewels" manufacturers most of the jewelry in their show case. Please come in to one of our stores in order to get helped on designing and manufacturing a new ring. Also, depending on the quality of gold, we can use your own gold to make a new ring or we trade it in to one of ours. |
